STUDY: “Because it makes my delivery plan easier: a qualitative study of factors contributing to preference for caesarean section in Thailand”
This study aimed to explore the factors influencing women’s and healthcare professionals’ increasing preferences for caesarean delivery in Thailand. Using a formative qualitative study including 78 in-depth semi-structured interviews with pregnant and postpartum women, as well as healthcare personnel, the researchers collected data and conducted a thematic content analysis on the topic of cesarean delivery in Thailand. They identified three main themes among women and healthcare providers: (1) perceived avoidance of the negative experiences and pain of vaginal birth; (2) belief that CS is a safer mode of delivery; and (3) CS facilitates the management of delivery time.
This information on perceptions of childbirth in Thailand can help opinion leaders and healthcare professionals identify opportunities for intervention to improve maternal healthcare.
