Vietnam, which has moved from a low-income to a middle-income country over the past decade, has experienced an increase in Caesarean section rates in parallel with its urbanization. The proportion of women undergoing C-sections has increased almost sevenfold in 17 years, from 3.4% in 1997 to 27.5% in 2013-14.
Nevertheless, this development is characterised by strong regional disparities. Indeed, while rural areas have reached a rate of 21%, 43% of pregnant women in urban areas, which are increasingly populated, give birth with a caesarean section. This difference is not unique to Vietnam, but these rates remain high compared to other developing countries.

Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University

Each year, the Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University (PNT) trains about 800-900 general practitioners, which is the largest training of medical practitioners among Vietnamese medical universities. Its mission is to train highly qualified health personnel and conduct scientific research to meet the health care and health improvement needs of the population. As the PNT Medical University is based in Vietnam, the team will be able to support and evaluate opinion leaders and data managers through regular training and awareness visits to participating hospitals. The PNT team will also be involved in multiple aspects of QUALI-DEC, such as determining the administrative and political context, encouraging the use of QUALI-DEC tools and data collection and analysis.
